Japan’s Ministry of Health has announced that two people aged 30 to 38 who received the first dose of the Moderna vaccine series, the use of which was suspended after the detection of foreign substances, died after a certain time.

Noting that no foreign substance was detected in the vaccine vials given to the deceased, the ministry said that “the causal link between the deaths and the Moderna vaccine remains unknown.”

Takeda, the manufacturing company Moderna and its sales and distribution partner in Japan, announced that the causes of death were being investigated in cooperation with the ministry.

Explaining that unopened Moderna vaccine vials contain contamination and some vials contain foreign substances, the previous week the ministry decided to recall more than 1.6 million unused Kovid-19 vaccines.

Takeda, on the other hand, said that as a safety measure, doses coming out of the same production line in Spain have been suspended in Japan.

In a statement on the matter, Cabinet member for Kovid-19 vaccines Kono Taro announced that more than 500,000 doses of vaccine have been administered from the series in which “potential contamination” was detected.
