81 armed gang members arrested in Nigeria last month

In a written statement, Frank Mba, spokesperson for the Nigerian Special Police Force, said operations against armed gangs were carried out in different parts of the country in May. Noting that 81 gang members were caught up in the operations, Mba said many gang members came out injured. Mba shared information that 45 weapons and a significant amount of gang-owned ammunition were seized during the operations.

In Nigeria, problems that began with conflicts between herders and farmers in 2008 have turned into kidnapping and theft attempts since 2015.

Last year 3,188 people lost their lives in clashes between armed gangs in the country.

As part of “Operation Puff Adder” which took place between April and July last year, 2,504 gang members were captured and 207 people kidnapped for ransom were rescued.
