EU blocks aid to Athens

It was stated that the European Commission has decided to cut aid to the Greek government unless it develops an independent research mechanism. Speaking to Der Spiegel, EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson said: “Greece has asked for more help, especially for the Aegean Sea. We informed them that such a payment would only depend on the establishment of a control mechanism that protects fundamental rights. Stating that Greece has formed a working group on this issue, Johansson said he expects progress.


The Greek coastguard has pursued aggressive surveillance policies by pushing boats at the refugees, occasionally firing a weapon and even using violence, according to the report.
