EU sends election observation mission to Iraq

According to the statement by the office of the EU High Representative for Foreign Relations and Security Policy Josep Borrell, the EU observer mission will monitor the elections to be held in Iraq on October 10 in the invitation of the high independent electoral commission.

Borrell has appointed Viola Von Cramon-Taubadel, Member of the European Parliament, to head the election observation mission.

Some members of the observation mission arrived in Baghdad and Erbil on August 28. In addition, a group of observers is scheduled to visit different regions of the country from mid-September.

EU observers will prepare a report, including recommendations, based on their assessment of election campaigns and practices on election day.
