In the survey conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), the think tank of 16,000 people in 12 EU countries, “If there was a European presidential election and the candidates were only French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which one would you vote for? ”question was asked.
MAJORITY CHOOSES MERKEL
In 11 of the 12 countries, including France, the majority of respondents are in favor of Merkel. Only in Bulgaria, the answers “Merkel” and “Macron” were equal to 31%.
Merkel received the most attention in the Netherlands (58%), Spain (57%), Portugal (52%), Denmark (46%) and Hungary (44%). In these countries, the rate of those who would prefer Macron has remained around 20%. In Germany, 42% of respondents answered “Merkel” and 27% “Macron”.

In France, Merkel’s preferences have overtaken Macron. In France, 32% of those polled chose “Merkel”, while 26% chose Macron.

LEAVING THE OFFICE ON SEPTEMBER 26
Merkel, who was Chancellor of Germany for 16 years, has decided not to run after losing votes in 2018. It is a matter of curiosity in the country which will replace Merkel, who will cede the seat of the German Chancellery in the September 26 elections.

Merkel recently said that she has stopped wondering what she will do after her tenure as Prime Minister, that she hasn’t had a normal working day so far and what interests her other than the political, saying: “Do I want to write? Want to give speeches? Do I want to travel? Do I want to stay at home? Do I want to travel the world? For this reason, I first set about doing nothing and waiting for what is to come. I think it’s also very interesting.
