Haiti earthquake toll is growing

The US Geological Survey (USGS) announced that the epicenter of the magnitude 7.2 earthquake was 12 kilometers northeast of Saint-Jean-du-Sud.

After the earthquake felt in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, people took to the streets in panic.

The USGS raised the tsunami alert after the earthquake recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Haiti’s Civil Defense Agency reported that at least 227 people died from the severe earthquake.

It was said that teams have been directed to the area for search and rescue efforts.

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry said many people lost their lives in the earthquake and extensive damage was caused.

Henry announced a month-long state of emergency in the country.

On the other hand, images of collapsed buildings in the area, which was the epicenter of the earthquake, and of people running through the streets were shared on social media.


One of the world’s leading earthquakes in the last century occurred in Haiti on January 12, 2010.

According to official figures, 316,000 people died and 300,000 were injured in the magnitude 7 earthquake that occurred in the south of the country.

1.3 million people were left homeless in the earthquake which caused great destruction.
