In a statement to the local press, Saddam et-Tavil, director general of health for Zikar province in southern Iraq, said that a black fungus infection had been detected in a person who died in Nasiriyah, the center of the province. Tavil noted that the infection in question was detected during the issuance of the deceased’s death certificate.

Health experts have said the fungus attacks people with weakened immune systems and have warned the disease is linked to the new type of coronavirus (Kovid-19).

Black fungus disease, which has infected around 10,000 people in India, has killed more than 200 people.

An investigation has been opened to find out whether cases of mucormycosis, which are commonly seen in people who have had a new type of coronavirus (Kovid-19) in the state of Kerala, India, are caused by pollution from the oxygen used for respiratory assistance.
