Italian mob boss Rocco Morabito captured in Brazil

In a written statement from the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and Public Security, it was announced that Morabito, one of the leaders of the mafia organization “Ndrangheta” in the region of Reggio Calabria in the south of the Italy, had been captured.

In the statement, it was stated that Morabito, described as “Italy’s second most wanted criminal”, and two foreign nationals accompanying him were arrested at a hotel in the town of Joao Pessoa, state of Paraiba, as part of an operation organized by the Brazilian police in cooperation with Interpol.

Brazilian Justice and Public Security Minister Anderson Torres drew attention to his country’s fight against crime due to Morabito’s capture and praised the security forces.

In June 2019, Morabito escaped from a void on the roof of a prison where he was being held to be extradited to Italy, Uruguay, along with 3 inmates.

Morabito, 54, wanted in his country since 1994, was arrested at the hotel he was staying in in Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, in 2017 after 23 years.

Morabito, known for playing a major role in smuggling activity between South America and Milan, Italy, has 30 years of convictions for various crimes in his country.
