Kazakhstan’s Defense Minister resigns

In a statement on the matter, Kazakh presidential press spokesman Berik Uali said President Kasım Cömert Tokayev had accepted Defense Minister Yermekbayev’s resignation letter.

Yermekbayev said he was ready to step down after taking control of the situation in the region after an explosion at a military ammunition depot in the south of the country last week.

The fire in the munitions depot of the military unit in Bayzakov district of Jambyl province on August 26 in Kazakhstan at 7:00 p.m. local time caused an explosion.

According to official sources, 15 people from the military personnel and the rescue team lost their lives in the explosions that occurred one after another in the military ammunition depot, and 90 people, mostly firefighters and rescuers were injured.

Murat Bektanov has been appointed Minister of Defense in Kazakhstan.
