Merkel and Biden discuss the situation in Afghanistan

According to a written statement by German government spokesman Steffen Seibert, Merkel discussed the situation in Afghanistan with US President Biden.

Merkel stressed that as many Afghan citizens as possible who support Germany should leave the country.

Merkel and Biden have decided to continue closer cooperation, including between the German military and US security forces, at Kabul airport.

The two leaders agreed to ensure that as many people as possible in need of protection leave the country.

Merkel also had a telephone conversation with the President of Uzbekistan, Shevket Mirziyoyev.

The Chancellor thanked Mirziyoyev for logistical support for the evacuation flights from Germany.

Chancellor Merkel met Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamed Al Thani last night.

In all of her phone calls, Merkel reiterated her call for the Taliban to stop violence, respect human rights and provide safe passage for those who want to leave Afghanistan.
