The Armenian people went to the polls yesterday for the early elections. The people made a choice among 26 political movements vying for the parliamentary elections held after Nikol Pashinyan resigned from his post as prime minister, after Azerbaijan liberated its territories occupied by Armenia with a 44-day war for almost 30 years. The race was between Nikol Pashinyan of the “Civil Contract Party”, who acts as prime minister, and the former pro-Russian president Robert Kocharyan of the “Armenian Alliance”. The Election Commission of Armenia announced that the turnout for the elections, the official results of which will begin to be announced after midnight, was 49.4%.

According to the results of the poll conducted after the voting process in the 2008 electoral district, Pashinyan’s “Civil Contract” party leads with 49 percent of the vote. The vote rate of the “Armenia” (Ayastan) party of Koçaryan is 16%. According to the survey, the “Var d’honneur” party, founded by the third president of Armenia, Serge Sarkissian, is the third political force to cross the threshold with 8% of the vote.

According to Armenian electoral law, a party must receive at least 5 percent of the vote to be represented in parliament, while political blocs must reach 7 percent to cross the threshold. If the results of the investigation coincide with the census of the Central Election Commission of Armenia, it is considered that the opposition in Armenia will start demonstrating from tomorrow.
