According to national media, the Korean ship was attacked by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea while en route between the Republic of Benin and Ghana. During the attack, the pirates kidnapped the 4 Korean crew members and 1 Ghanaian on board.

On the other hand, the port authorities announced that the security forces had launched an operation to find the sailors.

Often designated by pirate attacks, the Gulf of Guinea is known as the most dangerous sea area in the world. There have been 24 attacks in the Gulf of Guinea this year and 128 people have been kidnapped in these incidents. In early December last year, pirates attacked the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker in the Gulf en route from Angola to Togo, and kidnapped 20 Indian sailors on board.

In November 2019, pirates attacked a Norwegian freighter sailing in waters 9 miles from Benin’s economic capital, Kotonu, and arrested the 8-person crew on the ship along with the captain.

In July last year, gunmen attacked a Turkish ship off the coast of Nigeria and kidnapped 10 of the 18 Turkish crew members for ransom. The kidnapped sailors were rescued by the Nigerian security force operation and handed over to the Turkish Embassy in Abuja.
