The release of Brusca, a member of Cosa Nostra, whose sentence was reduced for collaborating with the state after his arrest, sparked a backlash in the country.
Brusca, one of the most notorious members of the Sicily-based organization, was known by nicknames such as “human butcher” and “pig” because of the murders he had committed.
Brusca was the name that set off the explosives planted on the highway during the 1992 “Capaci Massacre”, when anti-Mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone was killed along with his wife and three bodyguards.
One of Brusca’s most horrific acts was when he ordered the strangulation of 14-year-old Giuseppe Di Matteo and his body destroyed with nitric acid.
Giuseppe Di Matteo was kidnapped in 1993 at the age of 12, in an attempt to silence his father, a mafia confessor, Santino Di Matteo. The boy, who had been held captive for more than 2 years, was killed on the same day that Brusca, who was then on the run, was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia.
After his arrest in 1996, Giovanni Brusca cooperated with the state and began to inform Cosa Nostra prosecutors.

Brusca was therefore entitled to a reduced sentence and was released after 25 years. Brusca, 64, is expected to remain on probation for 4 years.
HE IS RELEASED BY THE ATTORNEY HE KILLED
Brusca’s sentence reduction for collaboration with the state was made possible thanks to a legal arrangement initiated by the prosecutor Giovanni Falcone, whom he murdered.
While Brusca’s release sparked widespread outrage in Italy, Falcone’s sister, Maria Falcone, said: “This news hurts me humanely. But it is the law, moreover, it is a law that my brother wants, she must be respected. “
Santino Di Matteo, the father of Giuseppe Di Matteo, whose body was destroyed by acid, reacted even harder.
Speaking to the Corriere della Sera newspaper, Santino Di Matteo argued that Brusca “deceived the state” and said:
“The Pig (one of Brusca’s nicknames) knew my son Giuseppe since he was little. He played PlayStation together. But then he melted it with acid. 20 years for that horror? not even cry on a grave, but now he’s about to take a walk outside. “

The release of Giovanni Brusca, who confessed to participating in at least 150 murders after his arrest, also sparked a backlash in politics.
Enrico Letta, leader of the center-left Democratic Party, said: “It’s like a punch in the stomach, it’s out of breath. We wonder, how is this possible?
The leader of the far-right League party, Matteo Salvini, in his message shared on social networks, said: “The architect of the Capaci massacre, the murderer of little Giuseppe Di Matteo and others who have been melted in acid because he was the son of a confessor, the mafia boss Giovanni Brusca is released after 25 years in prison. The “justice Italians deserve.” That’s not it, “he replied.
