Scholz has been Federal Minister of Finance and Vice-Chancellor of the Merkel Cabinet since 2018. He took over as party leadership in 2019 to remain as SPD General Presidency. However, in the second round, he lost his lead to Saskia Esken and Norbert Walter-Borjans.

Although he lost the party leadership, he became the SPD’s candidate for prime minister. Over the next few days, Scholz hit the road saying “I want to be Chancellor of Germany”. Scholz, who was seen as a lackluster and monotonous statesman thanks to mistakes made by other candidates, has started to gain traction in the polls.

Allegations of corruption on Olaf Scholz’s biggest criticism. It was claimed that Scholz, then Prime Minister of the State of Hamburg, had tolerated illegal money laundering by MM Warburg, one of Hamburg’s private banks. However, investigations did not reveal that Scholz was “guilty”. As Merkel took decisive action in the fight against COVID-19, the opening of the stock exchange by the finance ministry helped Scholz. In addition to small and medium-sized enterprises, state aid has been granted to giant organizations, while financial aid has been given to those who have lost their jobs and closed their sole proprietorship. This increased confidence in Finance Minister Scholz. Particularly around the middle of this year, state support for flood victims in various parts of Germany gained Scholz points.
