United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said 11 billion doses are needed to immunize 70% of the world’s population against the new type of coronavirus (Kovid-19).
In his address to the International Forum on COVID-19 Vaccine Cooperation, Guterres said vaccines need to reach everyone and everywhere as soon as possible to prevent the emergence of other variants that could resist existing vaccines and undermine national immunization efforts.
“11 billion doses are needed to immunize 70 percent of the world’s population.” Guterres said this was an important threshold for ending the critical phase of the outbreak.
Drawing attention to the need to double production for equal vaccine distribution, Guterres stressed that an urgent G20-level working group is needed for the coordination and implementation of this.

Noting that 2 percent of the continent can be fully vaccinated with a population of over 1.3 billion, Moeti expressed concern over the increase in cases if adequate vaccines are not provided.
