UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said during the first emergency meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss Israel’s attacks on Gaza and the relentless tension in the region, of the “cycle meaningless bloodshed, terror and destruction “between Palestine and Israel. Speaking at the 3rd meeting held in the virtual environment yesterday after two closed-door meetings in which the United States blocked the release of the final declaration, Guterres announced that they are actively meeting with all parties to declare a ceasefire.

‘I ARRIVE’

Speaking at the meeting, which was attended by 15 members of the UN Security Council, as well as representatives from Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Egypt, China, Tunisia, Norway, from Ireland and Algeria, Mr Guterres said the clashes have further weakened the hopes of the two peoples to live together. Calling on council members to “allow mediation efforts to escalate and succeed,” Guterres said he was “horrified” by the growing death toll of Palestinian civilians and very sad at the deaths in Israel. Guterres described the bombing by Israeli forces of the 12-story building with the offices of the American media company Associated Press and Qatar-based al-Jazeraa television as “extremely disturbing.”

Speaking to a television station yesterday, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said that targeting the building where the PA and Al-Jazeraa offices are “was a very legitimate target”. Reiterating the claim that the building was also used by senior Hamas leaders, Netanyahu said “it was evacuated in advance to avoid civilian casualties.” Meanwhile, PA editor Sally Buzbee called for an international investigation, saying Israel had not provided clear evidence to support the attack.
